About

This game was an experiment to try and do full motion capture during Ludum Dare, and learn how to use O3DE's Motion Matching gem. The alien's animations were captured using Freemocap, with my 4 year old nephew as the actor. We actually managed to complete like 90% of what's in the game within the 72 hour jam window, but the game wasn't winnable; it was all mechanics but no game. So, we decided to switch to the "Extra" category and spend more time to polish and finish it.

In addition to motion matching, I wanted to use it as an opportunity to ship a feature I've been working on for another game project which allows you to render interactive prefabs into a UI sprite, and try combining it with LyShine's render-to-texture feature... So basically, I'm rendering an entire UI canvas to a texture (to create the box covers), mapping that texture onto a mesh, rendering that mesh into an offscreen render target, and finally rendering that into a UI sprite on a second UI canvas.

On top of that, I also wanted to play around a bit with implementing a unique telekinesis feature that doesn't just feel like a generic third person shooter. That part doesn't seem to have been well-received by some players, but I think it was worth experimenting anyways. That's what I find fun about game jams.
